Meet the Team

Geniece L. Hallett-Tapley, PhD
PI and Associate Professor
Dr. Geniece Hallett-Tapley was born and raised in Shelburne, NS, a small community with a population of ~2000 on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. She graduated from Shelburne Regional High School in 1998 and then proceeded to Acadia University, where she graduated with a BSc in Chemistry in May of 2002. Immediately following graduation, Geniece began work under the supervision of Dr. Frances Cozens at Dalhousie University, with whom she completed both an MSc (2004) and PhD (2009) in Physical Organic/Photochemistry investigating the excited state dynamics of carbocation intermediates within the confines of alkali-metal cation exchanged zeolites. In September 2009, she relocated to Ottawa where she began a Postdoctoral Fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Tito Scaiano at the University of Ottawa. In September 2011 she was promoted to Research Assistant. During her time in Ottawa, Geniece was fortunate to collaborate and aide in the supervision of a multi-national research team.
In June 2014, Geniece relocated back to the East Coast, and established a research group within the Department of Chemistry at StFX. In December 2018, she was granted tenure and was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. She is the recipient of the StFX President's Research Award (May 2023) and the StFX University Outstanding Teaching Award (May 2025). In her spare time she enjoys watching sports, playing basketball and spending time with her family.
Graduate Students
Our MSc students are trained as independent scientific researchers and gain valuable experience on world class experimental techniques and undergraduate supervision.

Anna Chisholm
Anna will be joining our group in September 2026. Co-supervised by Dr. Erwan Bertin, she will jointly be a member of the R1 Research Lab and will head our continued, collaborative efforts in clean fuel and remediation technologies.
Undergraduate Students
Our undergraduate students receive first-class training in a myriad of experimental techniques. As a student at one of the premier undergraduate institutions in Canada, our undergraduates are integral contributors to the scientific process. They are afforded opportunities to gain valuable knowledge in experimental design, while working along side the PI and a dynamic team of graduate students and regional, national, international and industrial collaborators.

Ella MacPhee
Ella is from Hammonds Plains, NS and is going into her final of an honours degree focused in sustainable chemistry. In her second summer in the GHT lab, Ella will be continue working towards the design of carbon-derived nanomaterials for the treatment of common pharmaceutical effluents. Ella was the recipient of a Cunningham Memorial Fellowship for her research this summer. In her spare she enjoys reading, running, and hiking in her free time.

Scarlett Evans
Scarlett is entering her senior year as an Honour's research student in the GHT lab from Hammonds Plains, NS. In her first research adventure, Scarlett will be supported by a Cunningham Memorial Fellowship to design metal organic framework materials to faciliatate photocatalytic transformations of nitroarenes with extension towards pollutant remediation for agricultural feedstocks. In her spare time, she likes to read and travel.

Makayla Bugden
Makayla comes to us from Corner Brook, Newfoundland for her first summer of research as a 4th year BScH student. Makayla will expand on previous work in our group looking at antioxidant dye/metal oxide composites for both reactive oxygen species generation and photocatalytic transformations. Outside of the lab, As her photo suggests, Makayla hobbies often involve anything to do with the outdoors!

Zoe Sturmy
Coming all the way from Port Hawkesbury, NS, Zoe joined the GHT lab in Summer 2026 as a 4th year BSc Advanced Major Chemistry student. Zoe will continue to examine the generation of Au nanoparticle composites using various carbohydrate reducing agents to try. Her main goal will be the advancement NP design towards milder methods with applications for medial waste treatment. When not in the lab, Zoe can be found at the StFX Box Office, or reading a good book or hiking a local trail.

Sarah Pitcher
Sarah joins the GHT group as a 3rd year BScH student from Bedford, NS for her first year of summer research. As a Mitacs Accelerate Intern, Sarah will help to advance our work with the Bertin lab on the design of materials for clean fuel applications. In tandem, Sarah will also look at developing catalysts for visible light dehalogenations. When she is not studying photochemistry, Sarah can be found at a local beachreading or traveling.

Mya Cornish
Also from Bedford, NS, Mya, a 3rd year BSc Chemistry student, will begin her first summer of research looking at new applications of strontium oxide nanocomposites for sustainable organic transformations. In her spare time, Mya enjoys running and spending time with friends.

Jesse Latter
Jesse a 4th year joint Chemistry/Engineering Major joining us from Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Jesse has always had a keen interest in all things STEM, particularly in renewable, such as hydrogen, and nuclear energy sources. He will work closely between the Departments of Chemistry and Engineering to expand the photocatalytic clean hydrogen project. Co-supervised by Dr. E. Bertin (Chemistry) and Dr. B. MacDonald-MacAulay (Engineering), Jesse be continuing his efforts on the design and optimization of a scalable prototype for clean hydrogen evolution. In his spare time, Jesse enjoy video games, reading, building (especially Lego) and anything that challenges my problem solving skills.

Adalia Wambolt
Adalia is entering her final year of as an chemistry honours student at StFX. Co-supervised with Dr. Alex Foo, Adalia will be continuing with the work of previous honours student, Victor Martínez-Macías looking at the synthesis of gold nanocluster-bioconjugates for novel allergen immunotherapy treatments.
