2024

​

  • November

    • Sasha successfully completed her Honour's Thesis proposal​.  Half way there!

 

  • Summer 2024

    • Leah attended CSC 2024 in June (Winnipeg, MB).  The group was well represented!

    • Yashodha finishes her time with us in the lab and will move on to persue a PhD under the supervision of Dr. M. English in the Dept of Nutrition at StFX.  Best of Luck Yashodha!

  • May​​

    • Congratulations to Kogie and Jill for graduating with first class honours!  Good luck at Dal in the Fall!

    • The Department was well represented at ChemCon2023 - hosted by CBU. Leah, Lauren and Victor all presented posters. Victor won best undergrad poster in the Macromolecules Division. Congrats Victor, and well done to everyone on their hard work!

    • 2024 Summer Research begins - welcome to new members Anna, Brooke, Sydney and Sasha!

    • Jill was awarded the 2024 Chemistry Merit Medal!  Congrats, Jill!

    • Our summer research has been approved for support from Clean Nova Scotia and the Province of Nova Scotia through the Clean Technologies and BOLD wage subsidy programs.  Thank you to both programs for supporting advances in undergraduate research!

  • April 

    • Leah was awarded an NSERC-CGSM for her continued MSc work! Congrats, Leah!!​

    • CSJ continues to fund our summer research program. Thank you to the Government of Canada for recognizing the importance of undergraduate research!​​

​

  • March 

    • GHT visited Acadia for a visiting lecture.  It was great to return to my alma mater and update them on some of our awesome research!

    • Jill successfully defends her BSc Honours thesis on plasmonic phenol generation

    • ​Kogie successfully defended his BSc Honours thesis on novel light-activated bismuth oxide materials for plastics degradation.

    • Leah defended her MSc proposal on sustainable nitroarene reductions.

    • Brooke and Lauren were awarded NSERC USRA for the upcoming summer and Victor was awarded a Scotia Scholar's award. Congrats to all!​​​​

    • Consuelo has finished her ELAP stay and is returning to Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina!  Safe travels!!

    • The group will be well represented at both regional and national conferences this summer.  Stay tuned for more information!

  • May​​

    • Congratulations to Sasha and Victor who are graduating with their honours degrees this Spring.  Best of luck to you both!

    • GHT is awarded teh Outstanding Teaching Award at Spring Convocation 2025.

    • 2025 Summer Research begins - welcome to new members - Ella, Jenna, Jesse and Adalia! Looking forward to an amazing summer of research!

    • Leah has returned from Spain!  Welcome back. We can't wait to pick up on some newly established collaborations!​

    • Sydney, Anna and Lauren were name shared co-Presidents of our Undergraduate Chemistry Society for 2025-26.  Congrats!!

  • March

    • Anna was awarded an NSERC USRA for her upcoming Summer 2025 research!  Congrats, Anna!​

    • Lauren was awarded the Cunningham Memorial Bursary for Summer 2025!  Awesome work, Lauren!

    • Sydney was awarded the Marangoni Memorial Bursary for Chemistry. Excellent job, Syd!

    • Adalia was awarded a Scotia Scholar Scholarship for her Summer 2025 research (co-supervised with A. Foo)

    • Victor and Anna both presented their work at our Annual Student Research Day.

    • Clean Foundation's Summer Internship Program continues to fund our summer work. Sydney and Lauren will be working on important environmental issues that would not be possible without this support. Thank you to the Clean Foundation for recognizing the importance of undergraduate research!​​

  • January

    • GHT visiting Acadia to act as the external examiner for an MSc defence.  ​​​​

    • Leah has left us for 3 months to visit the labs of Dr. Marin and Dr. Bosca at ITQ in Spain on a Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement supplied through the NSERC CGS-M program.  Good luck, Leah and enjoy the experience! 

    • Our work with Victor, Alex and coworkers on  novel bioapplications of functionalized gold nanoclusters has been accepted for publication in ACS Omega.  Congrats to all involved!

2022

  • September

    • GHT virtually presented work from the group at the 9th IUPAC International Conference on Green Chemistry​

  • July

    • NSERC DG funding approved! Here's to another 5 years!  Thank you to the Government of Canada.

    • GHT (talk), Megan and Darian (posters) all presented at the International Conference for Green Energy and Environmental Technology (Virtual/Rome).​

​​

  • May

    • StFX hosted ScienceAtlantic ChemCon 2022, virtually. Megan and Yashodha both presented their work.  Megan won 2nd prize in the Undergrad Organic Division and Yashodha 3rd place in the Graduate Materials Division for their oral presentations. Congrats to both of you!

    • ​Welcome to Megan, Nick, Jill and Leah for Summer 2023!

    • ​Mackenzie is chosen as the Class Speaker for Convocation 2023 and is the recipient of the 2022 Chemistry Merit Medal. Congrats Mac!

  • April 

    • Yashodha (NSGS). Julia (NSERC-CGSM) and Aaron (NSERC-CGSM) all receive funding for 2022-23! Congrats to all!​

    • CSJ continues to fund our summer research program. Thank you to the Government of Canada for recognizing the importance of undergraduate research!

    • GHT receives a StFX University Council for Research Grant to start a new adventure on the photocatalytic applications of black TiO2. ​

  • March 

    • Sophia presented her thesis work at our annual StFX Student Research Day.​

    • ​Sophia, Mackenzie, Paytan and Darian all successfully defend their BScH theses.  Congrats Ladies!

    • GHT is awarded a 3rd year of funding for her Imperial URA award.  Thank you to Imperial for support of this exciting work. 

    • ​Megan (NSERC URSA) and Leah are both awarded summer research scholarships for the upcoming summer; Megan - NSERC USRA and Leah - the JC Cunningham Memorial award.  Congrats to both!​​

2023

  • December 

    • GHT and E. Bertin were awarded a NetZero Emerging Concepts and Technologies Award fro $50,000 to support our studies into sustainable hydrogen generation for alternative fuels.​

​

  • October​

    • Consuelo arrives in Nova Scotia for her 6 month exchange supported by the ELAP program (Government of Canada). Welcome, Consuelo!!​

  • September​

    • GHT visited MtA to give a research seminar on our excited work in the lab!​

​

  • July

    • ​GHT, E. Bertin and G. Marangoni were awarded matching funds from Research NS for their recent CFI JELF award!  New equipment is on the way to our programs!!! ​

​

  • May​

    • GHT was awarded the 2023 President's Research Award at Convocation 2023!

    • ​​Marisa arrives from Valencia Spain as a 2023 Visiting James Chair Researcher after several years delay due to COVID.  Looking forward to 6-weeks of productive research.

    • The Lab was well represented at ChemCon2023 hosted by Dalhousie University. Jill, Julia, and Yashodha presented posters, while Julia and Megan presented talks.  Both Jill and Julia won for best undergraduate and graduate poster, respectively, in the Physical Chemistry division.  Well done to everyone on their hard work!

    • Summer 2023 research season begins! Welcome back to Jill and Meg and a warm Tapley group welcome to our newest members - Kogie, Lauren and Victor!

    • GHT attends SurfaceCanada2023 hosted by McMaster University and presents a talk on the applications of copper based-nanomaterials.

    • Megan is awarded the 2023 Chemistry Merit Medal!  Congrats, Meg!

  • April 

    • Leah is awarded a NSGS for her upcoming MSc work in September 2023!  Congrats, Leah!!​

    • CSJ continues to fund our summer research program. Thank you to the Government of Canada for recognizing the importance of undergraduate research!​

    • The Government of Canada IRAP program offers generous support of our collaboration with CEC Analytics for continued development of our bacterial nanosensor technology.

    • CFI results are released - GHT, E. Bertin and G. Marangoni were awarded ~0.5 million for establishment of a Sustainable Materials Research Centre at StFX! Congrats to all involved.

    • Thanks to Dr. Bertin, the XRD is up and running!!!

  • March 

    • Megan successfully defends her BSc Honours theseis on plasmonic waste water treatment. 

    • ​Jill, Kogie and Victor received research scholarships for the upcoming summer; Jill- NSERC USRA and Kogie/Victor- the JC Cunningham Memorial award.  Congrats to all!​​

  • February 

    • GHT, Erwan and Gerry are co-applicants on a large CFI application for infrastructure to support the growth of a Functional Materials Centre at StFX! Fingers crossed.

    • Our James Chair Research Fund application in collaboration with the Foo Group for the establishment of culturing infrastructure in our building was approved.
